Case study

Background 

2017 saw dramatic reform in the disability and aged care sectors. The NSWATN has had exposure to issues surrounding My Aged Care (MAC) through engagement and consultation with Aboriginal communities and sector forums and clients. MAC provides services to allow aged people to remain living in their homes utilising these services to maintain quality of life. The NSWATN has heard the messages and is undertaking a process of developing fact sheets and flyers for public dissemination targeting the Aboriginal community.

Process

The NSWATN is developing staged fact sheets for sector and community information that is not only culturally specific to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people but is also relevant to the wider eligible aged community.

Flyers will be distributed through the vast NATSIC/ NSWATN service network and will provide step by step directions on:

  • Contact information
  • Eligibility
  • Transport specific information
  • What to consider in packages
  • Tools to navigate the service system
  • Access to support
  • The MAC processes

Outcome

Aboriginal people and communities have a better understanding of MAC and are aware of processes involved in registering and accessing MAC. Targeted distribution to eligible Aboriginal people will provide vital information to ensure these people do not fall through the gaps of available service provision.
